Try Your First Judo Class – Free!
We welcome new students of all experience levels to join a complimentary trial class at Nakashima Dojo, where safety, respect, and proper technique come first. No experience is required, and our instructors adapt instruction to each age and ability level so everyone can train with confidence.
What to expect in your First Class!
No commitment. Wear comfortable clothing, bring a water bottle, and a positive attitude 🙂
Junior and Youth
Junior ages 6 to 8 and Youth ages 9 to 15.
- Ukemi, the art of falling without injuring oneself
- Major throwing techniques which includes Hip, Leg and Shoulder Throws
- Training and proficiency in Judo Tournaments
Adults
Ages 16 and up.
- Ukemi, the art of falling without injuring oneself
- Major throwing techniques which includes Hip, Leg and Shoulder Throws, Strangulation and Arm Locks
- Training and proficiency in Judo Tournaments
Judo BC/Canada
All members must belong to the Judo B.C. or Canada Organization.

Adults
Ages 16 and up
Wednesday from 7:00pm to 8:30pm
Friday from 6:30pm to 8:00pm
Youth
Ages 9 to 15
Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00pm to 8:30pm
Junior
Ages 6 to 8
Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00pm to 7:00pm
FAQs
Do I need experience to join?
No experience is needed. Beginners are welcome, and training is progressive with a strong focus on fundamentals and safety.
What ages can join?
We offer three programs: Junior (6–8), Youth (9–14), and Adults/Teens (16+).
Is judo safe?
Safety is central to our practice. Students learn ukemi (safe falling) and train with discipline and respect to help prevent injuries.
What should I wear to my first class?
Wear comfortable athletic clothing and bring a water bottle. Please remove any jewelry. A judo uniform (gi) is not required for your first class.
How do I try a class?
Use the “Book a Trial Class” button on the website, or contact us by email or phone to confirm which class to attend.
What is the current season schedule? (2025/2026)
- Adults (16+): Wednesday 7:00–8:30pm; Friday 6:30–8:00pm
- Youth (9–15): Tuesday & Thursday 7:00–8:30pm
- Junior (6–8): Tuesday & Thursday 6:00–7:00pm

What are the monthly fees?
- Junior: $45/month
- Youth: $55/month
- Adults: $55/month
Do I need Judo BC / Judo Canada membership?
Yes. All members must belong to Judo B.C. or Judo Canada. Membership is $90/year.
What style of judo do you teach?
We practice judo rooted in the teachings of Kodokan Judo, emphasizing fitness, confidence, discipline, and respect.
